update - miami?

January 30, 2010

Our blog posts generally go up a week after the events actually took place. We don't always have a great internet connection so blogging/picture uploading can become irritating. We are very grateful for scheduled posts.

For those who are avidly following our route - we went from San Jose, Costa Rica to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica to Panama City (airport) to Guayaquil, Ecuador and we are currently on the Galapagos Islands - and we're really looking forward to posting the millions of pictures we took at these places.

Originally, our next plan was to go to Lima, Peru and climb Machu Picchu, and continue on to Argentina and Brazil. Due to devastating mudslides and the fact that it is not the best time of year to do the climb, we have decided to skip South America for now and come back at a later date.

So, we think we're going to head to South Africa via Miami, Florida. The flight to Miami is booked and we leave the day after tomorrow. Right now we're looking for accommodations and things to do - seeing as many of our lovely readers are well-traveled, we were hoping you could let us know about some of the experiences you've had, if you've been there.

Comment below or send us an email at sendingpostcards {at} hotmail {dot} com. Thanks in advance!

Oh, South Africa! I can't think of a place I'd rather go. A country with names of places such as Cape of Good Hope, Free State, and Dragon Mountains (Drakensberg), what's not to love?

Looking forward to hearing all about it!

Hey Mina and Alex,
Wow, South Africa!! I know a blogger based in Cape Town. Check out Primitive Culture blog and he will be able to make some great suggestions!

Can't wait for your African adventures! You never know what's next when travelling, eh? But that's the beauty of it all!

I'm cracking my skull trying to think of places to recommend while you're in Miami. It's always hard to think of things to do when you live here.

If you want to do the tourist thing, try Lincoln Road in South Beach that has all types of shops and restaurants. It's got a great bar called Zeke's that sells I don't know how many beers from around the world for cheap. Key Biscayne is nice if you want to just lounge on the beach without being bombarded with people wearing Ed Hardy shirts like you would if you went to South Beach (try Crandon Park there). If you want to stray off the beaten path there are a ton of great restaurants along the Miami River. I'm sure if you ask around you'll get some good recommendations. You've got Coconut Grove, as well. The thing is, it's hard if you don't have transportation as the buses and trains are a joke and cabbies can run expensive. Best thing would be to stay by the beach and walk around. The Big Pink is another great place. It's a diner that's open until really late.

Why is it that I'm only telling you about places to eat? ;0)

If you're in Miami for a couple of days, then you might want to consider heading to the Everglades for a day. They are really beautiful. Of course, the beaches are fantastic and the Cuban food is ridiculously good --- but you already know that. Have fun!

It's so sad about Machu Picchu!!! I hope you guys have the chance to go there later!
South Africa sounds amazing!! It's probably a good idea to go there now, before the World Cup, when it's going to be really crowded. Have a great time!

Have a safe trip and its great you are going to SA now, because the world cup is coming up and it would be really difficult to get a flight in/out without paying A LOT!

South Africa is amazing!! I can't wait to see what you guys do, and I can't wait to go back. I could go on and on, but I'd have to say my favorite activities were watching the sunset from the top of Table Mountain, and wine tasting around Franschhoek in with a picnic lunch at Boschendal Estate :)
