métro de montréal

April 4, 2011

The Montreal Metro is Canada's busiest subway system and it's filled with award-winning art and architecture. Each station was built by a different Canadian architect. Apparently, the Paris Metro was the inspiration behind it and, in turn, the Montreal Metro has inspired other stations including the Mexico City Metro which shares a similar design. I remember thinking how incredibly efficient (and unbelievably cheap) the Mexico City Metro was. Unlike the one in Mexico City, the stations here don't have a strange sewer smell and are surprisingly clean.

Musicians are allowed to play in designated areas, under the harp sign. I've run into this guy a few times:

He always has this exact same ridiculous setup. I think he's my favorite busker. The metro is also connected to the 'underground city', but more on that some other day...

This post brings back so many memories. Being a student at UQAM who lived on Saint-Denis St near Jean Talon, I spent quite a bit of time in the subway :)
Merci !

Oh this makes me wish I was visiting Montreal...brings me back to days in University when I had to get home to Toronto. I find the Metro super easy to use along with being full of character. Great photos!

Gorgeous station in that first shot! I wouldn't mind commuting through there every day.

The metro was crazy! especially the Berri-UQAM stop as it was always full of people! I agree the Metro in Montreal was much nicer than the ones I've been to in Chicago and Paris, but I enjoyed the one in London (I felt like it was pretty clean).

I can't wait to read your post on the underground city as my boyfriend and I found it impossibly difficult to navigate.

Great pictures! You captured it exactly how I remember it and my favourite scenes. Each station is so unique and beautiful in its own way, I miss that. Too bad the Montreal metro is so inefficient and small...

I wish our singers were that creative! Haha. I would pay to see a man in a fake boat play the guitar.

Love the guy in the boat. Now HE looks like someone I'd like to do coffee with. Although, you can never tell with those musician types. They always seem so interesting and when you finally get to talking to them they rarely are... it's a paradox I'll never understand.

I love seeing the man in the boat at Place des Arts metro! I especially like how he's wearing a striped shirt in your photo too ;)

Oh, I have some fun memories of the metro in Mexico City! It definitely prepared me for my travels on the Indian rail way. Thanks for sharing your metro :)
