guggenheim

I was really disappointed that we didn't see the Cindy Sherman retrospective at the MoMA. On the day that we went, the queue wrapped around the street and went on for blocks - I'm not even trying to be hyperbolic. Luckily, the line at the Guggenheim was significantly shorter. What's up, New York? I don't remember having to wait in a single line for anything when we were there for the summer in 2010.

Anyway, I was thrilled that Francesca Woodman's photography was on display at the Guggenheim and was happy to wait to see it. The New York Times referred to her photos as "a girl’s visual equivalent of “Catcher in the Rye” while The Globe & Mail said that Woodman was "the art world’s Sylvia Plath, or a Catherine whose Heathcliff was her work. Her 800-some black-and-white photos are small, frail, romantic, consistent in their inconsistencies.” - perfect.

  2. I hate queues... Even more when I visit a new city. It makes me feel like I'm loosing my time and missing other beautiful places!

  3. Ellie - Thank you!

The slow pace - Exactly. We would have waited in that line all afternoon and then had to rush through the museum.

  4. Just curious... but did they change their photography policy? Last time I went there (it's a few years ago) I got the impression that taking pictures inside the museum were a no go except from the ground floor.

  6. Michelle - I don't think they changed it... but there was a spot on the top floor where a bunch of people were taking photos and the security guard wasn't saying anything, so I went for it.

  7. Ah lucky ;) I wish more museums would allow their visitors to take pictures of their exhibitions. Of course the rules are there to protect the artists, but it's shots like these that makes me go 'uhhh, i wanna see this too!'

  8. I like museum, exhibition, and waiting long line is really part of it. And it could be a good pic like yours above.

  11. the guggenheim is my favorite museum in the city. and I agree with you that it seems like everywhere you go these days, restaurants, the post, the bank, museums, you name it, in NY, there's a line longer than ever. Living here you can get quite frustrated over it but it's almost become second nature and I've just come to expect it. these photos are lovely.
