Kalama Beach • 3 comments • Kalama Beach Park sits centrally in Kihei, across the street from a variety of low key eateries and shave-ice stands. Unlike the more pristine beaches to the South, the main attraction here is seeing ranks of tourists and locals trying their best at board sports. After all the snorkeling and swimming we did on this trip, we didn't try our hand at surfing, but I think we had more fun watching people from the shore. I wasted my time taking a picture of a paddle boarder and didn't even notice the guy showboating in the background. Have you ever seen someone look so bored while surfing?
Road to Hana // Part II • 10 comments • The Road to Hana is basically a metaphor for the cliched expression “it’s about the journey, not the destination”. You could spend days doing the drive, stopping at each bend for an attraction, or view. Our experience was a mix of periodic showers, the resulting rainbows, a few hikes, random stops, and punctuated with a visit to the Red Sand Beach of Kaihalulu Bay at Hana. The trailhead for Twin Falls is marked by a simple turnoff and a fruit stand selling goods from the nearby farm. A quick walk through a garden path eventually leads to a small waterfall and swimming area. Worth stopping for, but because it’s so well marked, and non-treacherous it tends to be busier than other stops. It had just finished raining when we drove by the Upper Waikani Falls, so we decided against following the slippery path down to the bottom of the falls. That said, taking a break from driving to stretch your feet in front of 3 waterfalls (a.k.a. the Three Bears) is one of the treats of driving the Road to Hana. Once in Hana, we made sure to see the Red Sand Beach of Kaihalulu Bay. Finally, we retraced our driving back along the road, and made our way back to the South shore.
